Many customers ask us which Dirndl suits them best and which length and neckline shape we recommend for different body types. We provide a brief overview of the different lengths, necklines, and details of the latest Dirndl styles and share what works best for each figure.

Length Matters

There are three main categories of Dirndl lengths: Mini Dirndl, Midi Dirndl, and Long Dirndl. The best length depends on body shape and personal preference.

Mini Dirndls have a skirt length of 50 – 60 cm and are, as the name suggests, the shortest option. Women who love to show off their legs and feel comfortable in shorter skirts often choose this length. One drawback: If you plan to dance on beer benches at festivals, be aware that a Mini Dirndl may not provide full coverage. This is especially true for taller women, as Dirndls appear even shorter on them.

Midi Dirndls are the most versatile and suit every woman, regardless of height. With a skirt length of 65 – 70 cm, they are knee-length or slightly longer. They allow for a flattering display of legs without revealing too much. The Midi Dirndl is the most popular length and complements all body shapes.

Long Dirndls are the most traditional of all Dirndls. With a length of 80 cm or more, they show the least amount of leg. Traditionally, a long Dirndl should end "one beer mug height above the ground." They are not only favored by women who appreciate classic styles but are also perfect for cooler seasons. This length is suitable for all women and is especially flattering for plus sizes.

Neckline Perfectly Highlighted

There are now many variations of Dirndl necklines: the popular square Balconette neckline, the romantic heart-shaped neckline, or the traditional high-necked style. The deciding factor is not only a woman’s personal preference but also her bust size. While deep necklines once allowed for revealing looks, the high-necked Dirndl has now become very popular. It not only flatters smaller bust sizes but is also perfect for women who prefer a more modest and elegant look.

For additional emphasis on the décolleté, the right Dirndl blouse can make all the difference. Lace blouses are particularly trendy – a key trend is the high-necked lace blouse, paired with a Dirndl featuring a deep neckline. However, lace blouses can also be beautifully combined with high-necked Dirndls, creating a sophisticated and playful look.

Fabrics and Details

Cotton fabrics with traditional patterns are perfect for folk festivals as well as family celebrations and are highly practical: Cotton Dirndls can be easily washed in the washing machine!

More elegant Dirndls are made from artificial silk or glossy fabrics: They appear very high-end and are ideal for festive or extravagant occasions. These Dirndls are a popular choice for weddings but are also commonly worn at folk festivals or Oktoberfest.

The Dirndl bodice is always an eye-catching feature: tailored and tightly fitted, it accentuates every figure and impresses with individual embellishments. Whether laced or buttoned, adorned with trims or velvet appliqués – the bodice is the heart of the Dirndl and must fit snugly!

The Dirndl apron is an essential part of the Dirndl dress. Depending on the wearer’s preference, it can be more or less elaborately decorated. It also serves as a discreet indicator of the wearer's relationship status: A bow tied on the right means the wearer is taken, a bow tied on the left signifies she is single, and a bow tied at the back is traditionally worn by waitresses or widowed women.

Alternatively, more and more Dirndl aprons are being fastened with a decorative clasp instead of a bow. This clasp is not only practical but also serves as a stylish accent.
