The long dirndl, the classic of traditional costume fashion – traditional yet modern, laced or high-necked. Get inspired now and find your new dream dirndl here!
In large parts of Germany, it's a staple in every woman's wardrobe: the dirndl. The traditional costume trend is gaining more and more momentum: traditional fashion is modern and is not only worn during Oktoberfest or folk festivals. Dirndls come in a wide variety of colors and patterns as well as in different lengths. Short dirndls are especially popular among young women and the young at heart, as they impress with their sporty and youthful look.
But the longer models are also gaining more and more fans. The classic among them is the long dirndl, as it can undoubtedly boast the longest tradition among traditional dresses. The long dirndl was first mentioned in the 19th century. At that time, women wore it as work clothing in everyday life, in the fields, or at home. Nowadays, so-called maxi dirndls are often very festive dresses, worn for traditional celebrations or even weddings.
How long should a long dirndl be at most?
A long dirndl gives its wearer a special sense of grace and elegance. However, many women who opt for a long dirndl wonder how long a maxi dirndl can or should be. The general rule is that the skirt should be approximately ankle-length. If you want to be especially sure, you can follow the traditional rule: a long dirndl should be no shorter than the height of a beer stein. To do this, place the stein on the floor and measure whether the top edge of the stein aligns with the bottom hem of the dirndl skirt.
Long dirndl for many different occasions
A long traditional dress or dirndl can of course be worn on many occasions. Whether for elegant events or casual festivities – in the MOSER online shop you'll find what you're looking for.
The simplest dirndl is the so-called "Waschdirndl" (washable dirndl). Originally made from cotton bed linens, it can be washed entirely in the washing machine. A Waschdirndl is ideal when the dress code is more casual but still traditional, such as at family gatherings or village festivals. For elegant occasions like weddings, christenings, or other special celebrations, a festive long dirndl also looks stunning. These are usually made from fine, shiny fabrics and decorated with intricate embellishments. A particularly patterned fabric for the dirndl or apron that also creates a beautifully flowing skirt is, of course, the real highlight.
Long dirndls are especially ideal for brides on their wedding day, as they come very close to the classic wedding dress while still conveying traditional elegance.
The long dirndl is perfect for every figure
With its long skirt, the maxi dirndl flatters the figure and creates a beautiful silhouette with a slim waist. This makes a long dirndl suitable for both petite women and women with a few problem areas. It’s also perfect for women of all ages, as the long dirndl can be worn very traditionally or styled in a modern way with accessories.
A long dirndl is generally worn without a petticoat to allow the fabric of the skirt to flow naturally. But that doesn't make it any less attractive. With especially eye-catching details such as ribbons, patterns, chains, or the apron, every long dirndl becomes a true eye-catcher.
